History of our Club
About Our Club
The Rotary Club of Nanaimo North was spearheaded by Bruce Coleman and sponsored by the Rotary Club of Nanaimo. We were chartered by Rotary International on October 15, 1972 as the second club in the Nanaimo area.
The Rotary Club of Nanaimo North has raised and distributed over $1,000,000 to these communities and we are continuing to build this legacy.
The most ambitious project undertaken by the club was the restoration of the Bastion which began in 1989. The Bastion was built in 1853 and is the oldest original freestanding Hudson's Bay Company fort in North America (it is represented in our club logo at the top of the page). The Bastion was designated a Municipal Heritage Building on December 2, 1985 and is listed on the Canadian Register of Heritage Properties. It is the oldest building in Nanaimo and possibly the second oldest in British Columbia.
The club through grants, donors and the community raised $285,000 over a 3 year period to rebuild this structure to stand as a monument to the pioneers of our city. Club members have helped to build the children's playground at Maffeo-Sutton Park and painted the exterior of Hospice House. The funds we have raised have also been used to support; Special Needs Van for Parks and Recreation, Nanaimo Firefighters Association Fire Safety House, Child Development Centre, Port Theatre, Equip for Life, RCMP Auxiliary Radios and the Boys and Girls Club Mentorship Program to name a few. Most recently we have partnered with the Rotary Clubs of the Nanaimo area to build washrooms on the Parkway Trail at the Northfield intersection and contributed towards a Skateboard park at May Richards Bennett Pioneer Park, the Third Street Field House and the Nanaimo Museum.
The Rotary Club of Nanaimo North has for many years supported our local youth through scholarships and bursaries and annually donates $9,000 to this cause. We also have supported many inbound and outbound year-long exchange students through the Rotary Youth Exchange Program.
We will continue to support these communities through our fundraisers and projects and are grateful to our community for their generous support over the years.
