The project reported here is part of a multi-year collaboration between the Sunyani Central Rotary Club and Nanaimo area clubs.  A delegation from Nanaimo clubs is planning to visit Sunyani next year.  See  story in the News section for details.

Dear Canadian friends

I bring you warm greetings and sunshine from Ghana. I am happy to submit a report on the malaria net distribution and training. In all, we purchased 936 malaria nets. The beneficiaries of the malaria nets are found in the attached report. Due to the slowness of my internet, I will be sending you additional photos in my subsequent emails. I have also attached the receipts and bank statement.

The President and members of the Rotary Club of Sunyani Central are very grateful to you for all the assistance you have offered since our cordial collaborative Rotary work started a few years ago. Together we shall continue to work to bring solace to our deprived people.

Training College. The Nurses will serve as trainer of trainers. This will help
prevent the high incidence of malaria.

In June, 2012, a seven-member team from the Rotary Club of Sunyani Central, led by Past President Samuel Ankama Obour, visited their Rotary Counterparts in the British Colombia, Canada.  The Rotary Club of Sunyani Central has a long-standing cordial relationship with her counterparts in the BC. Joint Rotary projects including market toilet, school toilet, hand-dug wells, supply of computers and library books and donation of malaria nets have been undertaken.

The June 2012 visit afforded the Sunyani Rotartians the opportunity to attend a District Conference in Victoria, BC. The Rotarins learnt a lot during their visit and also shared experiences with their counterparts in Canada. They visited a number of Rotary clubs and attended their meetings. Another significant part of the Sunyani Rotarians visit was ‘work shadowing’. The Rotarians had the opportunity to be attached to professionals who are either Rotarians or non Rotarians. This was a wonderful experience for all the Rotarians.

As part of the visit, the Canadian Rotarians presented a cheque of US$5,500.00 to their friends from Ghana to purchase malaria nets for distribution to hospitals, schools and some communities in the Sunyani Municipality. Later on Canadian Rotarians promised to increase the amount to US$8,000.00 to cover malaria prevention training as well.

CONCLUSION

The malaria nets distributed will immensely contribute to the reduction in malaria cases reported daily to the hospitals in Sunyani.  The training on malaria prevention and use of malaria nets has had a great impact in both Sunyani and Berekum Municipalities. Moreover, with the training of the student nurses, they will in turn train community leaders and pregnant women on the incidence of malaria and how to prevent it.
