HMCS Nanaimo and Strawberries

The visit of the naval patrol vessel HMCS Nanaimo during Bathtub weekend takes me back to my youth and strawberries.
The 'Nanaimo' strawberry variety was developed by Dr Hugh Daubeny, a plant breeder with Agriculture Canada.
He named the variety after the city of his birth and after the Corvette HMCS 'Nanaimo' that his father commanded in 1941. The strawberry variety 'Nanaimo' produces fruit with an appealing fresh flavour.
I knew Hugh during my childhood because he worked with my father at the Research Station in Agassiz and he was also one of my scout leaders.
